Thanx, Pat. (I was reading your Radio today, BTW.) Yes, George Lakoff, author of “Whose Freedom?”, at an NYPL forum on propaganda called “Orwell Comes to America” in 2007 said the Democrats always get it wrong when they try to appeal to voters’ self-interest. Dems use what he called the Enlightenment fallacy, the supposition that you only need to present the facts and people will reach the right conclusions. Not so. Republicans go for visceral emotions and self-interest. He said the moral appeal is best, the argument that it’s the right thing to do. Don’t try to appeal to self-interest, which the Democrats are never successful at doing persuasively anyway.

Democratic political operatives tend to focus on GOTV runs and think people will automatically discard right-wing narratives from the land of make believe.

The results of this election teach us (again) how wrong that sort of thinking is.

The other side is always marketing, alwasy messaging. If there isn't a policital issue they can win on, they will CREATE ONE to throw people off (look at the curve ball that insane "Ground Zero Mosque" meme threw into things).

I will have to read tonight after work, but just based on your title, you've hit the nail on the head. I hears one woman voter interviewed on NPR saying she voted straight Republican because of the bank bail-out. I wanted to scream. Plouffe must never, ever leave again, not for even one day.
